Because Salvestrols were so prevalent in our diet historically they are very safe. But the scientists who discovered Salvestrols have performed many safety tests-not on animals, but in human cell lines.
They have identified that the body needs a critical level of Salvestrols to enable it to perform correctly. Too little and the protection is inadequate. Too much and the protection mechanism turns itself off because it is too swamped and the Salvestrols cannot be used by the body. Therefore the correct dose is critical.
FIVE A DAY DOWN TO ONE-A-DAY
Do you manage to get your ‘five a day’ fruit and vegetable target every day? I know I don’t always manage it. Life is busy and stressful, and it’s easy to grab something fast or make a quick sandwich instead…and watch those good intentions to have a salad for lunch disappear out of the window on the back of a flying pig!
If that sounds like you – you probably also reach for supplements in a damage limitation exercise to try and bring the daily diet back under control? Well, there’s good news, after all the nay-sayers told us that popping a pill was no defence in the battle against the bad diet.
Newly discovered salvestrols, which like a lot of the best ideas, were discovered while scientists were looking for something else, are probably the most significant breakthrough in nutrition since the discovery of vitamins and are a key solution in helping resolve our ‘night out –vs- healthy diet’ dilemma.
So…what are salvestrols?
Salvestrols are a recently discovered group of totally natural, newly identified phytonutrients, found in fresh fruit and vegetables. They are probably the substances responsible for giving us the advantages of a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables.
Cells in the body use salvestrols to help correct themselves when things go wrong. They are like the cell's police force that helps make sure the cell functions correctly. The sorts of situations where the body would normally use salvestrols are autoimmune diseases where the body turns on itself and which generally cause inflammation. There seems to be some relationship between the increase in the incidence of these conditions over the past 100 years and the gradual reduction in the presence of salvestrols in the diet.
The mechanism by which the body uses these substances first evolved in mammals millions of years ago but worryingly, the researchers also found that salvestrols are disappearing from our diet at an alarming rate due to modern farming and food processing methods
They also estimate that we only get about 10-20% of salvestrols in our diet that we did a century ago. The main culprit in modern day farming is the use of fungicides - because they prevent plants from producing salvestrols as a part of their natural defence mechanism.
So – even on a completely virtuous organic diet, high in fruit and veg, it’s apparently now impossible to get enough of these powerful nutrients. The only way you can be sure that you are getting sufficient salvestrols in your diet is to take a supplement. But they’re now available from Holland and Barrett, so if you want to get some serious phytonutrients in 2007, you heard it here first.
