SPA HISTORY

Spa comes from the Latin 'SaIus per aquam' - healthiness by water.

Alquimia use ancient and modern methods of healing, helping your body to rejuvenate, improve your health, your looks and your general well-being.

Spas of antiquity were the temples of Beauty and health, places where the spiritual energetic and physical curative arts were mastered through water, essential oils and natural curative methods.

THE ALCHEMY OF BEAUTY

Nestled in the heart of Stonegate, in the Shambles of York, is one of the country's best-kept spa secrets, the gorgeous Alquimia Spa.

Opened in 2001, the spa is decidedly decadent, and the interior is stunning. But rather than hi-tech potions with names that purely pretend to be natural, Alquimia products have an intriguing history all of their own, based on botany, alchemy... and even astrology.

The company philosophy revolves around a respect for nature, and the spa prides itself on only using products from companies that respect the spiritual nature of Alquimia, respecting the environment and supporting fair trade.
According to Julie Sharp, owner of Alquimia Spa; "Alquimia means alchemy in Spanish. Alchemy was thought to be about turning lead into gold....but in our case its about turning the lead of the physical body into the gold which is the soul or spirit. We believe the best way to access the spirit is through the power of aromatherapy and through the chakra system."

So, on the Alquimia spa menu, you won't just find cellulite treatments and detox wraps. You will find chakra balancing with gems, "We believe that crystals also help to connect us to the earth and during body treatments we use crystals on the chakra points." - described as 'The way of Inner Wisdom', spiritual healing and the fabulous sounding Cleopatra treatment with frankincense and myrhh.

Alquimia believes ina holistic approach to health, with a menu of exercise classes for body and soul. Along with the usuall yoga and Pilates is dance - Egyptian belly dancing to be precise!
