Woman with a cold

BOTTOMS UP!

Good news - another health benefit has been attributed to red wine - fighting off the common cold. According to scientists in Spain, drinking wine, especially red, stops people from developing colds.

The evidence comes from a year-long study of 4,000 volunteers. That’s the kind of medical trial you want to volunteer for...

Experts at five universities found that people who drank more than two glasses of red wine a day had 44% fewer colds than teetotallers.

Drinking one glass of red wine a day also protected against colds, but to a lesser extent.

So, break out the Shiraz and sneeze no more..

Rosie Spectacle's Cold Clinic

Colds suck. Big time. There are a whole host of wild and wonderful cures for colds and flu, often involving paracetomol and expensive cold remedies that taste a bit rubbish and don't actually work. But what does? Well, Rosie has just recovered from a cold herself.and here's how she did it.

  1. Sliced fresh ginger (ginger powder is apparently more potent and lasts longer in the cupboard) and lemon juice squeezed into hot water with some honey (local honey is much better as it builds your immune system to local pollen, ready for next year’s hay fever).

  2. Berocca fizzy tablets - the high strength vitamins B and C are
    brilliant for colds

  3. To clear your head, try rubbing a drop of peppermint oil or Olbas Oil onto your temples can help. Origins have a similar product called Peace of Mind, which works a treat on headaches too.

  4. My all encompassing cure-all is to get some probiotic supplements down your neck, but not the drinks things as they can be full of sugar. Any decent brand of probiotics will do - I always stock up on whatever's cheapest, but only use them when you feel run-down, so your body doesn't become reliant on them.

  5. Last of all, wrap up, put your slippers on, get a hot drink and watch
Neighbours. Once you've got a cold you just have to let it run its course,
so it’s best to indulge in your illness with great vigour!
