A kiss, according to Louis Armstrong, is just a kiss. While that may well be true, a new survey reveals that kissing plays a more important role in the wellbeing of our relationships than some of us might think. The survey, which was commissioned by online dating site www.datetheuk.com, found that practically everyone – a staggering 98% of men and 97% of women - agrees that kissing is one of life’s greatest pleasures.
But more importantly, the consensus, among people interviewed, was that kissing plays a key part in making us feel physically good: an astonishing 97% of women and 90% of men surveyed reported that kissing makes them feel better, with 70% of both men and women agreeing that kissing is one of the best ways to relax.
KISSING FOR YOUR COUNTRY
It's official – we aren't kissing enough! The latest survey from online magazine getlippy.com reveals that a staggering 95% of young women believe they aren't getting enough when it comes to kissing.
It’s not surprising considering that nearly a third of women polled claim that they don't even manage to pucker up once on an average day. National Kissing Day, which was on 6 July, should be the perfect opportunity for Brits to up their snog quota…
The snog draught
It’s not good – apparently almost a quarter of women (24%) have experienced a kissing drought and gone for over a year without so much as a hint of a kiss. WE have some serious ground to make up, and 75% of women believe that the Brits should let go of their stiff upper lip, get some exercise and follow the example of Europeans by kissing more openly in public.
The good news is, what we lack in quantity, we definitely make up for in quality. In the league of best and worst kissers, the Brits sweep the board with nearly half (42%) of the vote for great kissing. The Italians - the Casanovas of Europe come in second with 15%, closely followed by the French with 13%.
Stiff upper lips
The Greeks aren't so hot in the snogging stakes, they were voted as the third worst kissers with 14% of the vote!
Kate Creasey, editor of getlippy.com, the leading online magazine for women aged 18-25, comments: "It seems that the old British reserve has caught up with us once again when it comes to kissing, even amongst the younger generation. While we have the will and the way, Brits clearly aren't locking lips as much as we'd like to. We should definitely take a leaf out of our European cousins' book and learn to show our affection more openly by puckering up more often - not just for National Kissing Day."
Euw! I'd rather not...
When it comes to kissing etiquette, there are some things you just shouldn't do. Well over a third of women voted bad breath as the worst offender. Yuck! Slobbering all over your partner is a passion killer for another third of women and 18% are put off kissing someone who smokes.
Yes please...
When it comes to which celebrity lips women would most like to plant a smacker on, Johnny Depp's take the most kissable crown (yes please) closely followed by Brad Pitt - both way ahead of David Beckham who scored a lowly 12%. Ageing rockster Mick "Rubber Lips" Jagger came in last place with a mere 1% of the vote.
And Angelina Jolies' perfect pair of cupid bows topped the list of which lips women would most like to have (35%) whilst Leslie Ash's now infamous lips were bottom of the pile (1%). Oh dear, and they probably cost so much, too.
