working at home

Some 41% of self-employed people are teleworkers.

This relates to the finding in a survey by the Federation of Small Businesses which found that 39% of small businesses were home-based.

This domestic enterprise is of immense importance to the UK economy, and ought to have much more encouragement and support from government agencies.

THE MUMTREPRENEURS

Did you know, that more than a third - 34% -of new and expectant mums decide to set up their own business from home to combine child care and earning a living?

Britain’s new mums have emerged as an entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with, as a new report reveals that 34% of these ‘mumtrepreneurs’ are looking at starting their own business from home, so that they can stay at home with the kids and contribute to the household income at the same time. Not to mention keeping the brain exercised while the ankle-biters are asleep or at nursery!

The survey, commissioned by AXA Protection among 1,354 new and expectant mums, found that on average, those polled are generating £467.91 in earnings per month from home-based business ventures, that's £5,614 a year.

34% of the women polled say that they work from home - or want to work from home - spending an average of 18.4 hours a week on their home based work, which works out to about 2.5 days in an average nine to five office set up.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as an extra 21% of women are thinking about re-training or using the skills they already have to earn money from home, with 10% saying they would consider re-training in holistic therapies or using the experience they already have to earn money from their own home.

About 8% are considering looking after children in return for payment and 4% said they wanted to teach yoga, Pilates or another fitness-based class at home, with 25% saying they would consider returning to their previous job if they could work remotely from a home office.

Accountancy or business consultancy were unpopular homeworking choices (1.9%), and surprisingly buying and selling goods on eBay or developing a mail order business was only an idea for 1.4% of the women surveyed.

So many options, so little time...what are you waiting for?
