Roy and Judith

At the end of the run, Roy and Judith will be 60 and 55 years old respectively. So this run is by no means easy, which is why each two week of running – doing 6.5 miles a day -  is followed by a week’s rest, to protect dodgey knees & backs! They hope to finish in late September 2008

Roy has been a regular short distance runner for 35 years; about 10-15 miles a week over 2-3 runs, clocking up about 18,500 miles over the years.

Judith is relatively new to running, starting 7 years ago. But she has done 3 Great North runs and now has the bug. She hates the actual run but enjoys the great feeling afterwards!

one coin for cancer

What are you going to do with that £1 coin you found in your jeans pocket when you were sorting out the washing? Put it in a change jar? Spend it on a gossip magazine? Or give it to Cancer Research?

A couple from Chorley have got some ideas about what you could do with it! Roy and Judith Evison are doing their bit by running a staggering 900 miles -from John O’Groats to Land’s End. The couple are doing all this to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research. Roy who was a GP in Chorley for 30 years, and his wife Judith will be setting off at the end of January.

Roy has only just retired, but instead of putting his feet up or spending time on the golf course, he decided he wanted to do something meaningful. He explained why.

“ My sister died of cancer three years ago, and this run is dedicated to her memory. She wanted us to raise as much money as possible for future research. We have a simple but important message, one that everyone needs to understand. The incidence of cancer is increasing rapidly. One in three of us will get cancer, and one in four of us will die from cancer. If this was any other disease, there would be utter panic at these figures!”

Talking of his experience as a GP he added “I have seen at first hand the awful devastation that cancer brings to the individual and the family. We are facing a situation where virtually every family will have someone, somewhere with cancer.”.

Everyone’s responsibility

Roy points out that more research is essential if we are to understand how cancer first develops, and then be able to design cures. “We are making amazing strides in our understanding, but we must drive this progress forward urgently. This is everyone’s, and every family’s, responsibility”

The couple have come up with a catchy slogan for their appeal – 1c2c; that’s ‘One Coin to Curing Cancer’. They are putting in all the hard work, and all they want from us is one little pound coin. Roy says:

“There are 60 million people in this country. Most of us can afford £1, and that could mean a huge boost for cancer research” said Judith. She adds “ Cancer Research UK have been so wonderfully supportive and helpful that we want to do our best for them”

Exercise and health

Roy also wants to spread the word about exercise, because he knows that people who exercise regularly – even just a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day – will dramatically reduce their risk of many important diseases, including some cancers.

Donations and support

Family donations can be made at www. justgiving.com/ judithandroyevison

How you can support the campaign

  1. Ask everyone in your family to give just £1 to Cancer Research - and get one family member to collects the money and sort out the donation.
  2. Spread the word : email and text everyone in your address books about 1c2c.
  3. If you are in business, spread the word to the employees, we will accept donations both large and small, but ideallly we want every family member to donate £1.
  4. If a business would like to support us financially, that would be wonderful and we’ll stick a message on the motor home. Any unused cash will go into the fund. If you want to give us a donation then that’s wonderful as well and we can still advertise by means of a message.
  5. Help along the route is always welcome! Somewhere to park a mobile home, electric hook-up, washing of running kits! Or just give us support if you see us on the road. If you want to offer help, leave a message and contact number on the website.
  6. If you work in the media, any publicity you can give would be tremendous.
  7. If you’re a celebrity and want to support us, or run with us, just get in touch.
