Following her career as international athlete and UK athletics coach, Julia gravitated towards sports psychology. Guiding others came naturally to Julia, prompting her to train as a counsellor at the renowned Kensington Consultation Centre. Julia has been working with people from all walks of life, and with all levels of difficulty for thirty years, and now works as a core therapist at the highest level.
As a former international marathon runner, Julia’s accolades include winning the Dublin City Marathon and representing England in the 1986 Commonwealth Games. Within her own journey to peak performance, she experienced many highs and lows and discovered the skills necessary to perform at top level and to manage herself effectively, whatever challenge, difficulty, success or triumph she experienced.
own your own power
By Julia Armstrong
We live in a limitless and abundant universe, pulsating with energy, power and possibility, more than we will ever know about or understand in our wildest dreams. We are connected to everyone and to everything on the whole planet.
We create our futures and we manifest our hopes and dreams. Much of this happens in the spaces between us, within each interaction we engage in with everyone we meet and through using all that is at our disposal on this planet. In this moment now you have the power to manifest whatever you desire. You may not believe this, of course! You may have a history of giving your power away to other people, or of letting others have power over you, with all your hard work and good intentions seemingly coming to nothing.
Where do you spend your energy?
Review where you put your energy now. Where do you put it out in terms of money and time, love, physical energy? Review, also, where are you bringing energy towards and into yourself. Stop and notice what you have in your life that you love and appreciate. This exercise will show you where you are already using your power to create what you desire.
Now think about what you like about yourself. What are the qualities that make you uniquely you. Own these. There is only one you on the whole planet and you have a set of skills and talents and energy and power beyond your imagination. But you may need to clear anything that is blocking the flow of energy, or heal areas where you are leaking energy in unproductive ways.
So now, imagine yourself being all that you dream. See yourself in all your beauty and imagine performing to the best of your ability. See yourself attracting all the things you desire, whatever that may be - love and abundance, success and joy. Notice where you resist this, notice the doubts, the uncertainties, the part of you that turns away saying ‘that is for others, not for me’. Write down these doubts and uncertainties as they arise, they are valid and have a message for you. We cannot be certain without doubting and we cannot be positive without integrating the negative and listening to the messages within these thoughts and feelings.
Core beliefs
It is at the core of your being where your true essence can be found, where your full and amazing power lies and so it follows that it is at the core that we must clear any beliefs that limit this power. Beliefs that we are not good enough, not loveable, not okay. These beliefs can find you giving others your power and letting others manipulate or bully you into believing this is what you deserve. By understanding yourself more deeply you will see where you are in denial or maybe afraid of your own power, especially if you have lived trapped by limiting beliefs for a long time and not using your own energy wisely to live your life fully.
Beside the negatives that you find write the corresponding positive and notice where you resist it. With this, you can take yourself to a place in between the thought that is holding you back and the vision of ultimate full expression. You will generate an internal shift by moving as far as you feel comfortable away from the place of least power towards the place where you own your full power.
This practice needs to be a daily practice now, noticing where you give your energy away meaninglessly - in negative thought, or unnecessary activity, or in destructive behaviours around what you eat, perhaps, or what you say about yourself to others.
Taking responsibility
By taking responsibility for yourself, becoming more conscious of your words and your reactions and your energy you will see that no one can have power over you unless you allow it. No-one can take your power unless you give it to them. You have started a process of reclaiming your power, a gradual process, and one that entails a long and possibly never-ending journey, but a journey that will bring you closer to yourself and the unfathomable power that lies within.
