SAVE THE POLAR BEARS!
If the story of Knut melted your Polar ice caps - the Ice Warrior Project and Born Free are looking for volunteers to take part in an Arctic exploration to try and help save the polar bear from extinction.
The partnership is calling for 50 to 60 novice volunteers, from all walks of life, to go on one of six major expeditions. The journeys will cover over 3000 miles of the Arctic Region taking in all four North Poles, including the last significant place on Earth that remains un-reached; the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility or Arctic Pole, which Jim will be doing solo and unsupported.
Jim explained:
“Ice Warrior takes all the fantastic facets of the golden era of exploration and brings them into the 21st century. In those days there were no polar experts and so they relied on a public call to fill their expedition team places. This gave ordinary people the chance to achieve great things and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
“Our exploration these days is about delivering the reality of global climate change as portrayed through the stories of these purposeful and worthwhile adventures and the science is all about gathering vital evidence of change.”
“Next year we will be conducting the most extensive human exploration ever undertaken in an effort to benchmark the condition of the region and its wildlife, for comparison in future years. One particularly emotive icon is the polar bear; a magnificent animal which I’ve encountered many, many times over the 23 years I’ve travelled the Arctic. To think that these might become endangered or even extinct over just a short period of time is shocking; that’s why it’s vital this work is carried out. It is an extraordinary animal and it deserves all the support we can give it.”
